The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is the 911 GT3 of the hybrid world: a more potent, focused, plug-in Prius, for the hardcore who want to sharpen their hybrid’s performance. Not by cutting the 0-62mph sprint, obviously, but by reducing the Prius’s CO2 emissions from 89g/km to less than 60g/km. How does the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid work, and is it an improvement on the standard Prius?

The breakthrough comes from more efficient lithium ion battery cells replacing the regular Prius’s nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Lithium ion cells have a superior energy density and can be recharged more quickly from a socket – hence the plug-in suffix. Toyota claims the cells can be charged in 90 minutes from the power source.

With a full charge, the plug-in Prius can drive solely on electric power for 12.5 miles. That’s double the zero-emissions range of the nickel-metal hydride Prius and, with a threshold of 62mph, around twice the maximum speed before the gasoline engine joins in. Toyota says that 80% of car journeys are less than six miles, which means the plug-in Prius could theoretically complete a return trip without the engine stirring.  This should make Englewood Toyota owners very pleased if your commute is minimal.  The gas savings alone will be enough to make a few car payments.

The Prius can operate as both a series and a parallel hybrid. In series mode, the electric motor turns the wheels; when more power is needed, the motor works in parallel with the gasoline engine. But there’s always the safety net of the gasoline engine, which eliminates the range anxiety – the fear of being stranded by a depleted battery – of purely electric vehicles.

Externally, the plug-in looks identical to a regular Prius, except for the flap above the front wheel arch that hides the charging socket. Under the skin the mechanicals are the same. There’s a 134bhp 1.8-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine, supplemented by an electric motor yielding 153lb ft. Drive is sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission.

Trundling around urban areas, you’ll struggle to coax the plug-in Prius out of electric-only mode. You don’t have to accelerate like a snail – a decent span of torque will get you up to urban speeds without any drain on the liquid fuel tank. Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA, Inc. today announced that the general public has selected ‘Prii’ as the preferred plural term for Prius.

The Prius Goes Plural voting campaign was launched on January 10 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and challenged the public to help the automaker determine the plural nomenclature of Prius. The campaign coincided with the world premiere of the Toyota Prius family of vehicles. With 25 percent of the votes, Prii becomes the word not only endorsed by the public who chose it, but also as the term recognized by Toyota. As such, Dictionary.com has updated its entry for the word ‘Prius’ to reflect this.

Toyota unveiled the winning word at the Chicago Auto Show this morning. Jay Schwartz, head of content for Dictionary.com, was on hand to inform the public that, as the plural of Prius has now been determined, the term ‘Prii’ will be reflected in Dictionary.com.

After the more than 1.8 million votes were cast during the course of the six-week campaign, Prii beat out its four competitors: Prius, Priuses, Prium and Prien. “Community has always been a big part of the Prius brand, so it was only fitting that we invite the online communities to participate in the plural discussion,” said Colin Morisako, advertising manager for Toyota. “The people have spoken—Prii will be the accepted term used to describe multiple Prius vehicles going forward.”

The plural of Prius has sparked debates since the launch of the vehicle 10 years ago. Tokyo/New York – Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp remained the world’s largest automaker last year, but General Motors rose to once again pose a formidable challenge, sales figures released by the companies showed Monday.

Toyota said its global sales in 2010 increased 8 percent to 8.42 million vehicles, maintaining its status as the world’s largest carmaker despite a massive recall damaging its reputation. The figure included the sales by its subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor Co and Hino Motors Ltd.

GM sold 8.39 million vehicles in 2010, a 12.2 percent jump. The increase comes as international sales rose, with China the most important market surpassing the domestic US market.

The US giant was first surpassed as top carmaker by Toyota in 2007 after ruling the market since 1931. In 2009, the Detroit-based carmaker was forced to take a government bailout to stave off bankruptcy.

Toyota’s overseas sales grew 6 percent to 5.96 million units while its domestic sales were boosted 14 per cent to 1.57 million, Toyota said in a statement.

The Japanese carmaker had to recall more than 10 million vehicles worldwide late 2009 and early 2010 over problems with accelerator pedals, floor mats and brakes. The recalls dealt a devastating blow to the company, which was known for the safety and quality of its products.

Germany’s Volkswagen with 13.5 per cent sales growth and 7.14 million vehicles sold was the third-largest automaker. French-Japanese duo Renault-Nissan and South Korea’s Hyundai-Kia rounded out the top five.

One of the main ways I ensure the quality of my work is to use quality parts.  I have purchased oil filters from a variety of different auto parts stores, and I have found that not one of them has ever left me without a few drips of oil on the garage floor every night.

I thought that maybe I was doing something wrong (not me, I know everything, haha) so I took it to my Englewood Toyota Dealer, Groove Toyota, to have it inspected.  Only 10 minutes had gone by when then Service Consultant came to me with a question; “do you do your own oil changes?”  Obviously I answered “yes”.  He then took me back to the shop where my car was being worked on and showed me that the o-ring on the oil filter was not seated properly.  They proceeded to complete the oil change and replaced the faulty filter with a Toyota OEM filter.  For the next 3000 miles I didn’t have a single drip of oil in my garage.

Time comes for the next oil change; I figured that when I put on the oil filter last time I must not have had the o-ring seated properly like I was told at my Toyota Dealer in Englewood, Groove Toyota.  So I go through the normal routine of stopping at the local auto parts store and picked up the same brand oil filter I had used in the past.  I took extra precaution to ensure the o-ring was in the track on the filter prior to installing it.  Cool, I can do my own oil changes again, right? Nope, the next morning I go to the garage and again, there is that horrid sight of oil drips on the floor.  How could I possibly have done it wrong, again!

I took my car back to Groove Toyota and explained that when they did my oil change I had no drips at all, but I had just done an oil change the night prior and I already had drips.  The Service Consultant took me and my vehicle back to the shop and had a technician put my car up on his rack.  Once again, the leak was coming from a bad seal on the o-ring.  I asked them how that could be possible when I made sure that it was seated properly.  The answer I got shocked me, but in a good way.  It had nothing to do with my quality of work; it was a problem with the filter itself!  They explained that aftermarket filters are made to the specs of each manufacturer, but they do not always get measurements exact.  Being that I had just done an oil change the night before, the Service Consultant offered to replace the filter with a Toyota OEM oil filter at no charge to me.  I wasn’t totally convinced that it was something as simple as an aftermarket filter vs. an OEM filter; until the next day, week, and month went by without a single drop of oil in my garage.

Sold!  Since then, I have continued to do all of my own oil changes, but I always stop by my Englewood Toyota parts department at Groove Toyota and purchase a Toyota OEM oil filter.  And, since then, I have not had one drop of oil on my garage floor.

If there is anything that I can pass along from this very frustrating experience; it is that you should always try to use OEM parts when making any kind of repair to your vehicle.  The production quality of the parts is of a much higher caliber than those who produce aftermarket parts in mass quantity.

The 2010 Prius Hybrid is the first mainstream model to be rated at 50 miles per gallon (up from 46 mpg before), even though it’s noticeably peppier than the previous version. The new Prius also is surprisingly spacious, with rear seats that verge on being downright roomy, which also fold down in a 60/40 pattern to create a big hauling space, and a 21.6 cu. ft. luggage area in back.

The 2010 Prius’ powerplant consists of a 1.8-liter, 98-horsepower gasoline engine and two electric motors tied together by a planetary gearset that acts as a continuously variable transmission. Total horsepower is now 134, up from 110 before.

Toyota has also added some techie features to the Prius in three option packages. The $1,800 Navigation Package includes a navigation system, plus an upgraded, eight-speaker sound system, backup camera, and the possibility of adding real-time traffic alerts. The $3,600 Solar Roof Package includes the navigation system as well as a moonroof and a solar-powered system that cools the car when it’s parked on hot days. The $4,500 Advanced Technology Package includes the navigation system, as well as a dynamic cruise-control system, lane departure alert, and Intelligent Parking Assist (which you may have seen in Lexus TV commercials-it more or less parallel-parks the car automatically).

The 2010 comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock brakes, and front, side, and head-protecting airbags, as well as a separate bag to protect the driver’s knees.

The new Prius is now rated to accelerate from zero to 60 in 9.8 seconds, down from more than 10 seconds for the second-generation Prius.

The Prius now has three power settings. For day-to-day driving there’s “ECO,” which conserves gas. When you want a bit more oomph, pushing the “Power” button quickens throttle response, mainly in the midrange between, say, 30 mph and 60 mph. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

If you select the Corolla S, the LE’s equipment upgrades move to the options list, but you gain 16-inch steel wheels, full underbody spoilers, fog lights, sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an extra pair of stereo speakers.

Safety

The 2011 Toyota RAV feels a little traditional, even though it’s a modern crossover ute, with much more of an emphasis on roadworthy performance than off-road ability-and three rows of seating.

It has an impressive powertrain lineup, along with all the other makings for a good performance package-at least compared to other tall crossover wagons and SUVs. A 179-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine was introduced last year, while a 269-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 remains optional; as such, it’s the most powerful vehicle in its class. There’s no manual gearbox to be had; V-6 RAV4 models have a five-speed automatic, while four-cylinder models make do just fine with a four-speed auto. In either case, the RAV4 is offered with either front- or four-wheel drive. The four-cylinder base engine has enough power to keep most drivers happy; it’s smooth and responsive, with enough for all but the heaviest loads or toughest mountain grades. The larger engine gives the RAV4 the ability to sprint with hot-rod-like authority or pull off astonishingly quick passes. All the while, the RAV4 handles surprisingly well for such a tall, soft-riding vehicle. The optional AWD system uses electronic control to send power rearward when slippage in front is detected, and offers a true 50/50 fixed power split with a 4WD Lock mode.

The 2011 Toyota RAV4 misses few marks for comfort. With well designed seating, good seating comfort, and top-notch assembly quality, along with a tight, quiet cabin, the RAV4 has covers all the bases. The only minor gripes pertain to interior materials and third-row seating space. The interior of the 2010 Toyota RAV4 features an attractive two-tier instrument panel, good seats, a nice upright driving position, and plenty of storage spaces. The RAV4 teeters between compact and mid-size, but in any case, it’s one of the few vehicles of its stature to offer a third-row seat. The third row officially expands the RAV4′s capacity to seven, but you certainly won’t have much luck trying to get adults to ride in the RAV4′s third row. For that, you’ll need to move up to the larger 2011 Toyota Highlander. But the seat design doesn’t eat up much if any cargo space; when they’re not occupied by children, they stow nicely in a recessed area of the cargo floor.

The 2011 Toyota RAV4 is no luxury model, but it comes very well equipped, with three different trims offered with each powertrain possibility, covering a range from basic and fuel-efficient to luxurious or sporty and powerful. A Lexus-like electroluminescent instrument panel is standard, as are remote keyless entry, an auxiliary jack for the single-CD six-speaker stereo, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power mirrors, three 12-volt outlets, ten cup holders, and cruise control. The top Limited model can be optioned like a luxury model, with leather seating areas, heated front seats, and the SUV-requisite rear seat DVD entertainment system to keep the kids entertained.

If you choose the right model, you can do without the external spare; a Sport Appearance Package remains available, creating a more carlike silhouette by deleting it. Just that one change, combined with some other minor changes, make the RAV4 look much more like the crossover wagon it is.

For 2011, a new Upgrade Value Package adds a bunch of popular equipment to Base four-cylinder or V-6 models. It includes a six-disc changer, XM satellite radio, steering-wheel audio controls, 17-inch alloy wheels, a roof rack, a moonroof, and various interior and exterior upgrades.
